Many, many, many years ago, I attended the first mediation training given by Gary Friedman and Jack Himmelstein. The experience changed my ideas about what it meant to be a mediator and a lawyer, and impressed upon me the importance of knowing myself well in order to serve clients in the best way possible.
Although we have been in e-mail contact, I have not seen Jack or Gary since the early '90s so it was one of the highlights of The Mindful Lawyer 2010 to see Gary both in conversations with him, and as he gave a couple of presentations. (Videos here.)
Gary told me about a relatively new program he has developed called Self-Reflection for Conflict Professionals (SCPI). What a valuable experience for those involved! While still in California, I did a 2-year intensive with Gary and know how wise and insightful he was back then. With a couple of decades of living and mediating (and meditating) added to his life, I can see that Gary is even wiser.
From the Understanding Conflict Web site comes this description of SCPI:
We have a new video describing one of our advanced programs in Self Reflection for Conflict Professionals (SCPI), which is emblematic of our approach in all of our programs which have a strong self-reflection component for our work as conflict professionals. The Mediation Intensive Training is a prerequisite for the SCPI program and other Self-reflection in Action advanced programs on the East Coast, West Coast and in Mexico. The next Mediation Intensive on the East Coast is December 8-12th in New York and March 30-April 3 on the West Coast.

CuttingEdgeLaw interviews of Gary: Part 1 and Part 2. And a 3-part interview of Jack, also from CuttingEdgeLaw.
E-mail me if you are interested in joining a program in Colorado somewhat similar to SCPI.
