I am somewhat mystified and dismayed that some communication professionals are still using the 55%, 38%, 7% "rule." No, communication is not 55% body language, 38% tonality, and 7% words! (My earlier blog post on Mehrabian.)
This morning I was delighted to find in my e-inbox a fun video on the Mehrabian myth. Here it is for your viewing pleasure. Maybe this will be the final nail in the myth's coffin?
Note (added August 22, 2009): Listen to Dr. Albert Mehrabian himself talking about his research being misquoted.
Note (added February 1, 2010): At this blog post is a list of other bloggers pointing out the Mehrabian myth: Mehrabian’s nonverbal communication research: How it’s misinterpreted (Speaking about Presenting).
