I was very happy to see that Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, my collaborator at the Brains On Purpose blog and in the programs we are presenting, was mentioned in the David Maister blog comments in response to Maister's question about these thinkers. Of course, I agree. Jeff's research has shown that our thoughts can change our brain. From the description of our upcoming Smithsonian program "Brains on Purpose: Change Your Mind, Change Your Brain":
The science of neuroplasticity demonstrates that our brains are always changing, meaning that we can resculpt our brains in productive ways. This seminar teaches you how to achieve control of your brain so you can meet goals, create life-changing habits, and realize your full potential.
The morning session focuses on the brain and its role in how we think, decide, and act; how the amygdala (reflexive brain) and the frontal cortex (reflective brain) work in decision making; how people affect each other’s mirror neurons; and the difference between the mind and the brain, a distinction critical for self-mastery.
After lunch, the full power of the mind is explored, including the critical role of purpose—in the mind as well as between people—the concept of deliberate attention, and other key components in achieving self-directed neuroplasticity. Interactive exercises demonstrate how this works.
Mastering our minds to change our lives is ancient wisdom. But today, with Jeff's research, you can see how our brains are changed by our minds; you no longer have to take this brain-changing ability on faith. The implications this ability has for business is astounding, don't you think?
