As a mediator, I have found that setting does affect outcome. But before addressing subtle cues, like smell or warm beverages, I'd suggest that people focus on basic issues. I'd be very interested to learn what others think, but my personal list includes adequate space so that cramping does not increase anxiety; washroom\stretch breaks at realistic intervals; giving everyone an hour outside of the mediation space if the day is likely to run long; providing nutritious snacks (fresh fruit, almonds, low fat cheese) that do not cause blood sugar levels to crash, and childish, sweet ones to break tension and salve wounds (my favorite are jelly bellys).
